Lessons From Belfast
Wed February 20, 2008
Having a brilliant time in Belfast, leading up the leadership event. Saw the Titanic monument (the Titanic was built in this city) yesterday. Also went up above the city in The Belfast Eye (wow). And walked the city to get a sense of its energy (Northern Ireland has been a place of such change and transition).
Did a lot of media yesterday. At one stop at UTV, I met a man who was being interviewed about Northern Irish food. He owns a farm and also makes ice cream (his name is Will Taylor and I promised to try his Glastry Farm Ice Cream).

So for dinner we went to Nick's Warehouse where we heard we could get the good stuff. Here's the thing: I ordered my ice cream as my starter (yes, the server thought I was crazy - and then asked if there was a hidden camera). My fish dinner followed. (BTW the ice cream was exceptional).

Lessons learned from my time in Northern Ireland:
1. Struggle promotes authenticity and courage 2. Build community (relationships matter here) 3. People may not follow what you say but they will always do what you do (So LBE: Lead By Example) 4. AHF (Always Have Fun). I do believe that we need to have more fun while we work (and every audience on this tour has agreed with me). Fun builds collaboration, connection and boosts creativity. So inject Short Bursts of Fun into your day (all it takes is a little ice cream as an appetizer :)
I hope you enjoy the pics. After Belfast it's on to Prague (I can't wait to experience the culture), Estonia and Lithuania - two Baltic States I've been so hungry to visit.
