Lessons from Philemon
Sun November 09, 2008
I'm still in Joburg. En route to a workshop for people from all walks of life ready to express the best within them and lead without a title. In a car with a gentle man named Philemon who is taking me to the event. He's South African. And he adores his country.
You know I believe cab drivers are philosophers on four wheels. He just shared two insights that showed the depth of his wisdom and values:
1. Too many people are like tin cans with a coin in it. Noisy and apparently full. But in truth - empty on the inside. The point of learning? What's the point of having all the worldly accessories in the world yet being unhappy within?
2. Be happy when another human being intersects your path. Philemon said that the very fact that there's a living person standing in front of you versus a dead body is a reason to rejoice. "We should be happy for the life there," he shared with a deep and authentic laugh. "It should make us smile."
I asked Philemon if he is a happy man. You know his answer.
