I'm in Soweto. The home of the painful riots of '76, amidst apartheid. People were killed. Hearts were broken. Dreams were shattered.
This morning, I was to do an event in Johannesburg. Life is full of unexpected events and we were blocked from doing it. But leadership is all about turning "problems" into wins and living our highest values in the hardest of conditions. I could have gone back to my hotel. That's what I was encouraged to do. There was no possibility of me sharing my lead without a title message with those who longed to hear it I was told. It was a big blow for many people. But these things happen.
I've never held myself out to be perfect. I'm far from it. But today I made one of the best decisions of my life. And at the risk of sounding self-indulgent, may I please add that today was one of the proudest days of my 12 year career.
A large contingent of participants were on their way in to the Joburg event from Soweto. They were coming to be inspired. They were coming to learn how ordinary human beings could show leadership and shine brilliantly. They were coming to get ideas and tools to build a better South Africa. And I was determined to help them.
So I followed my heart. I made a decision. Turned out to be the right one. I asked my sponsors/tour partners to drive me into Soweto. We'd take the message straight to them.
The organizers shifted into high gear, secured a hall and handled all possible logistics with remarkable determination.
As we entered Soweto I saw Nelson Mandela's early home. Across the street was where Desmond Tutu lived. I saw where the first person was killed in '76. I talked to people on the streets.
And as for the event, I was humbled. Deeply so. School kids were there. Entrepreneurs were there. Social leaders were there. And for 90 minutes I spoke about how the world needs each and every one of us to show leadership. By making things better. By standing for excellence. By being radically ethical. By doing our parts to make the world a little bit better.
I'm just an ordinary guy. Following the call on my life. To help people let their gifts, passions, humanity pour out into their days. You can do the same thing. Just make a good decision. And start today. Please.
P.S. Thanks so much to my CEO Jason Axmith for supporting my decision and for his remarkable support at every step on this tour. You're the best Jason. Thanks also to Alf Mcknight and Gavin Friedman of Beyond Connection - and the whole Beyond Connection team for believing in my message. Each of you make a difference. And most of all, thanks to each of you who attended the Soweto event. At some level, I've been changed by my experience with you. And I'll never forget you for it.
