Tour's over. I'm in a silver cylinder at 40,000 feet. Flying from Cape Town to Frankfurt. Then home to Toronto. And my kids.
Yesterday, something beautiful happened. After three intense weeks sharing the message that every human being has the power to show leadership - at venues in Mumbai and Oman and Abu Dhabi and Dubai and Joburg and Cape Town (and giving the best I have within me to really help people play at Wow), I received a special gift. I got to meet one of the giants of our world one on one. I got to meet one of my heroes. I got to meet Nobel Peace Prize winner and humanitarian Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
My reflections? He is humble and decent and intelligent and wise. And I wish you could have heard him laugh as I worked with him to set up the Apple iPhone with my content on it. It lit up the room.
On his retirement as Archbishop, Nelson Mandela called Desmond Tutu "the moral conscience of our nation" and "a voice for the voiceless." He also said that Desmond Tutu could be counted on to make people laugh - amidst the most painful of times. A Giant indeed.
As I fly home, I am moved by what my eyes and heart have witnessed over these past weeks. From the conversations with world-class business builders in Mumbai to the executives in Dubai to the kids I spoke with in Soweto. I feel grateful for the moments I spent watching the sun come up over the mountains in Muscat, Oman and for all I learned in Abu Dhabi. I give thanks for the night under the African Big Sky at Didimala that reminded me we are all part of something so much bigger than ourselves and for the support I received by the crowd at Constitution Hill (a former prison that held Gandhi and Mandela) where I stood quietly in a solitary confinement cell. And I give thanks for my time with Archbishop Tutu.
Ultimately, I reflect with deep awe on the High Choice each one of us alive today have available to us in every moment of every day: to give in to victimhood or to step into leadership. We all can be a light in a world of darkness. We all can elevate and inspire everyone around us by the example we set. We all can live our own original form of greatness. And in doing so, we will do our part to build a better-more beautiful world.
P.S. I am ever so grateful to our tour partners (Beyond Connection - you guys are rock stars and I love you for it), to our clients, to the booksellers at the signings, to all the teams at the hotels who made me feel like I was with family and to all the members of the media who were so supportive of my books and message. And to each of you who took the time to attend the Lead Without Title workshops or attend the bookstore events, thank you. So much. I am humbled by your kindness.
